The Writers Guild of America has announced the nominees for the 2026 WGA Awards, with a film about the war in Ukraine, 2000 Meters to Andriivka by Ukrainian director Mstyslav Chernov, among the contenders.

The film is nominated in the category of Best Documentary Screenplay at the 77th edition of the Writers Guild of America Awards. Chernov is credited as both the director and the screenwriter of the documentary.

Competing in the same category are Becoming Led Zeppelin by director and screenwriter Bernard MacMahon and White with Fear by director and screenwriter Andrew Goldberg.

The documentary has also drawn attention from the Academy Awards. 2000 Meters to Andriivka was included in the Oscars 2026 shortlists published on December 16, 2025, when the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced contenders in 12 categories. Chernov’s film advanced to the shortlist for Best Documentary Feature. Ukraine also submitted the documentary in the Best International Feature Film category, though it did not progress there.

However, it was announced on January 22 that 2000 Meters to Andriivka did not advance to the final five nominees in the Best Documentary Feature category. The Dutch-Czech documentary Mr. Body Against Putin, which follows a Russian teacher who secretly documents his small-town school’s transformation into a recruitment hub during Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, was selected among the final Oscar nominees instead.

Despite this, 2000 Meters to Andriivka continues to earn major recognition, securing a BAFTA nomination in addition to its Writers Guild of America nod. The BAFTA awards ceremony is set for February 22.

The documentary follows a Ukrainian platoon assigned to push through a densely fortified forest in an effort to retake a strategically important village from Russian troops. Filmed from the viewpoint of a journalist embedded with the unit, it depicts their advance across shattered terrain under constant threat, while conveying a growing realization among the soldiers that the war may have no clear endpoint.

Earlier, The Guardian published its annual roundup of the year’s best films, naming 2000 Meters to Andriivka, a documentary by Ukrainian Oscar-winning filmmaker Mstyslav Chernov, among the standouts.

In the British outlet’s ranking of the 50 best films of 2025, the documentary placed second.
