NATO and Ukraine to Hold Emergency Meeting Over Russian Use of “Oreshnik” Experimental Ballistic Missile
The NATO-Ukraine Council will meet next Tuesday in connection with Russia’s first use of an experimental ballistic missile on the territory of Ukraine, reported AFP, citing informed officials on November 22.
A meeting of the NATO-Ukraine Council is being convened on November 26 in Brussels at Ukraine’s initiative to discuss Russia’s use of a medium-range ballistic missile on the Dnipro, which the Kremlin ruler presented as an experimental “Oreshnik” missile based on the older “Rubezh” ICBM, which is a potential carrier of a nuclear warhead.
Meanwhile, the White House issued a stark warning to Moscow regarding its missile strike on Dnipro and the involvement of North Korean troops in their war in Ukraine.
“Escalation at every stage has come from Russia,” said White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, condemning Moscow’s actions.
Russia deployed a new intermediate-range ballistic missile, based on the RS-26 “Rubezh” intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) as a response to the US decision to authorize Ukraine’s use of long-range ATACMS missiles for strikes within Russian territory.
Jean-Pierre declined to elaborate on the shift in US policy regarding ATACMS but stressed that the US would remain steadfast in aiding Ukraine.
“They (Russia) continue to escalate. We will continue to support Ukraine in its fight against this aggression,” she said.
She also dismissed Russia’s recent updates to its nuclear doctrine as “irresponsible rhetoric” and confirmed that the US sees no reason to adjust its own nuclear policies.
“We see no justification for modifying our nuclear posture or doctrine in response to Russia’s claims,” Jean-Pierre added.
