Nine Arrested in Poland for Alleged Russian-Backed Sabotage Schemes
Poland has arrested nine people in connection with acts of sabotage linked to Russia’s intelligence services.
“We have arrested and charged nine individuals suspected of carrying out acts of sabotage in Poland, working directly for the Russian services,” Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk revealed to private broadcaster TVN24.
He stressed that the sabotage was allegedly planned not only in Poland but also in several other European countries, including Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, and possibly Sweden.
“This includes beatings, arson, and attempted arson,” Tusk added.
Tusk noted that Poland is closely working with allies and neighboring countries regarding this matter, and he is satisfied with the effective work of special services.
Earlier this month, Tusk announced that Poland would increase its funding for intelligence services by an extra 100 million zlotys ($25.5 million) in response to the threat posed by Russia.
Previously, European intelligence agencies alerted their respective governments that Russia was scheming to carry out violent acts of sabotage across the continent, including explosions, arson, and damage to infrastructure on European territory, directly and through cover persons.
In recent months, authorities in Germany, Austria, and Estonia have arrested several other suspects for allegedly working for and collaborating with Russian intelligence in various capacities.
