North Korea Is Quickly Evolving Tactics While Fighting Alongside Russian Forces Against Ukraine

North Korea adapted their fighting tactics after their first clashed with Ukrainian forces in the Kursk region, The Wall Street Journal reported in an article published on April 8.
The pivotal battles in the Kursk region, from which Ukraine’s army has largely withdrawn, highlight how North Korean forces swiftly adapted their previously outdated tactics.
The news agency notes that the initial engagements on the battlefield in December were conducted in large groups, without support from artillery, drones, or armored vehicles, making them easy targets for Ukrainian defenders.
By February, their large numbers, physical endurance, and determination to advance under fire were paired with enhanced tactical awareness, such as moving in smaller groups.
Additionally, the Korean forces reportedly gained full support from the Russian arsenal, including glide bombs, artillery, and explosive drones. As they became more integrated with Russian forces, the North Koreans would typically hand over their positions to the Russians after completing their assaults.

In recent months, leader Kim Jong Un has urged North Korean soldiers to gain real combat experience. While Kim has not acknowledged sending North Korean troops to Russia, he has encouraged his military to study tactics suitable for modern warfare, as armed conflicts are becoming a common occurrence worldwide.
The outlet brings out one example of rapid adaptation, which is North Korea’s response to drones. When drones were first deployed, the North Koreans simply observed them, not recognizing the threat. But they quickly adapted, learning tactics to avoid or destroy the drones.
To minimize losses from Ukrainian drone attacks, the North Koreans learned to flank, with one group engaging in the attack while another struck from the rear, according to documents. They also split into smaller groups to reduce the risk of total destruction.
Documents seized from North Korean soldiers also show detailed reports on battlefield movements and a meticulous record of the equipment used.
On March 16, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine confirmed the withdrawal of Ukraine’s Defense Forces from the city of Sudzha in Russia’s Kursk region to take up more strategically advantageous positions along the eastern border of Ukraine.
Dorothy Camille Shea, the Deputy US Ambassador to the UN, has previously warned that North Korea’s involvement in the war against Ukraine provides its forces with valuable combat experience.
