Norway Commits Nearly €120 Million for Additional Patriot System for Ukraine
On October 29, 2024, Norway announced a significant financial commitment of approximately €120 million to support Ukraine in acquiring another Patriot missile defense system from Romania. This decision was confirmed by Norway’s Prime Minister, Jonas Gahr Støre.
The project involves collaboration with allies, including Germany and the United States.
In his statement, Støre emphasized the ongoing nature of Russian attacks and the urgent need for enhanced air defense systems in Ukraine. He reiterated that strengthening Ukraine’s air defense capabilities is a priority for Norway. To date, Norway has already contributed 4 billion kroner towards reinforcing Ukraine’s air defense, including funding for interceptor missiles for the Patriot systems, IRIS-T battery purchases, and repairs of existing air defense systems.
The provision of the Patriot system from Romania was first announced on June 20, but delays in parliamentary and governmental approvals pushed the delivery back until September 3, with the final confirmation coming from President Klaus Iohannis on September 5. The Patriot systems are critical for Ukraine’s defense against ballistic missile threats.
Additionally, Ukraine is set to receive another Patriot system from the Netherlands, with plans for further support from an unnamed ally.
Norwegian authorities also highlighted past contributions, including the transfer of the NASAMS air defense system and training provided to Ukrainian operators in using Western defense systems.
Norway’s Minister of Defense, Bjørn Arild Gram, stated that Norway and its Western allies must enhance their support for Ukraine, particularly in terms of air defense, which remains one of the most critical needs for ensuring the security of both military personnel and civilian infrastructure in the region.
