Ukraine is set to receive an additional two Patriot air defense systems this summer, according to a report by The New York Times on May 4.

One system will be transferred from Israel after undergoing a full refurbishment, while a second system may be supplied by either Germany or Greece.

The system from Israel is described as an older model, previously stationed in the region. Its delivery follows internal discussions among allies and a review of Ukraine’s urgent air defense needs, especially in light of intensified Russian missile attacks, including the April 24 strike on Kyiv — the deadliest since last summer.

NYT reports that Ukraine currently operates eight Patriot systems, with two undergoing repairs and six in operational condition. The addition of the Israeli system and a potential European one would raise the total to ten.

Germany and Greece together possess approximately 15 Patriot systems, while European countries collectively hold around 40, according to the NYT. The United States, which owns about one-third of the 186 Patriot systems globally, must approve any re-exports, even if they are facilitated through third countries.

US Department of Defense officials confirmed that weapon deliveries to Ukraine continue from previously authorized aid packages, which include both drawdowns from existing stockpiles and new procurements.

It remains unclear whether the decision to send these systems was made under the Biden administration or after President Donald Trump assumed office in January 2025.

When asked about the current administration’s position, National Security Council spokesperson James Hewitt told The New York Times that “President Trump has made it clear he wants the war in Ukraine to end and the killing to stop,” but declined to comment further on the specifics of the transfers.

Earlier in April, President Zelenskyy said Ukraine was prepared to purchase at least 10 Patriot systems from the United States and had discussed the deal directly with President Trump. He added that the US would “work on it,” but no further updates were provided.
