Oscar-winning Ukrainian director Mstyslav Chernov has begun work on a new documentary dedicated to peace negotiations.

The creator of 20 Days in Mariupol, which earned Ukraine its first Academy Award, was spotted in the United States during a summit attended by Ukraine and EU leaders.

According to theater critic Iryna Holizdra on August 19, who shared the news on Facebook, Chernov received official permission to film historic events, including inside the White House. He was granted access to the Oval Office, where Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy recently met with US President Donald Trump.

“Behind President Zelenskyy, on the left, you can see Mstyslav Chernov—the director of the documentary 20 Days in Mariupol, which won an Oscar. He is working on a new project—a documentary film about negotiations and ending the war,” Holizdra noted.

Earlier this year, Chernov was also recognized at one of the world’s leading independent film festivals. On January 31, he won the Best Documentary Direction award at the Sundance Film Festival for his film 2000 Meters to Andriivka in the “World Cinema” category.

The documentary captures the dramatic course of Ukraine’s 2023 counteroffensive, following a platoon of soldiers from the 3rd Separate Assault Brigade as they advance to liberate the strategically vital village of Andriivka in Donetsk region—a settlement encircled by mines and accessible only through a narrow strip of forest.

Previously, Ireland chose Sanatorium, a film directed by Gar O’Rourke and filmed in Ukraine, as its official submission for the 2026 Academy Awards in the “Best International Feature Film” category.
