Putin Seeks Talks With Macron—Paris Insists on Full Transparency With Ukraine

French President Emmanuel Macron and Russian leader Vladimir Putin are expected to hold a phone call as soon as this week to discuss a possible peace deal in Ukraine, according to The Telegraph on December 21.
On December 21, Putin had “expressed readiness to engage in dialogue” with Macron, The Telegraph reported, citing comments by spokesman Dmitry Peskov to Russia’s state news agency RIA Novosti.

France’s presidency welcomed the signal but said it would decide next steps in the coming days, adding: “It is welcome that the Kremlin has publicly agreed to this approach. We will decide in the coming days on the best way to proceed.”
Paris stated that any contact with Moscow would be carried out “in full transparency” with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and European partners, with the aim of securing a “solid and lasting peace” for Ukraine.

Macron said last week that Europe should be prepared to re-establish a direct channel with Moscow if prospects for a ceasefire and negotiations became clearer, after nearly four years of largely frozen high-level contact.
Earlier, it was reported that Russian President Vladimir Putin and French President Emmanuel Macron held a rare phone conversation—their first direct contact in years.
