Putin Seeks to Cement Power by Prolonging War, Zelenskyy Warns
Russian leader Vladimir Putin’s recent update to Russia’s nuclear doctrine is a clear indication of his intent to continue the war against Ukraine, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
The remarks were made during a joint press conference with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen in Kyiv.
Zelenskyy emphasized that after 1,000 days of full-scale war, it is evident that Putin has no intention of pursuing peace. “Today, Russia not only killed peaceful Ukrainian citizens but also unveiled an updated nuclear doctrine,” Zelenskyy stated.
He questioned why Russia did not present a peace strategy instead, adding that the move underscores Putin’s aim to sustain the war and remain in power.
“By extending the war, Putin seeks to consolidate his position in the Kremlin. His objective is to destroy Ukraine and other nations,” Zelenskyy said.
The Ukrainian president also pointed out the lack of strong responses from nations participating in the G20 summit in Brazil, where Russia is represented. According to Zelenskyy, the absence of firm statements following Moscow’s latest threats reflects a lack of cohesive strategy among member states.
“When Putin speaks about nuclear weapons, the global community must respond decisively, presenting a clear strategy for action should he use such weapons,” Zelenskyy urged.
Earlier, Putin signed a decree introducing changes to Russia’s nuclear policy. Analysts suggest this may be a reaction to the recent decision by the United States, France, and the United Kingdom to remove restrictions on Ukraine’s use of Western missiles against targets within Russian territory.
