On November 13, Russian leader Vladimir Putin signed a decree altering the compensation structure for Russian military personnel injured in the war with Ukraine.

According to the decree, payouts for “light injuries” and “other minor injuries” will be reduced, while compensation for severe injuries will remain unchanged.

As stated by Russia’s official news agency, RIA, Russian soldiers sustaining severe injuries will continue to receive a payout of $31,000. Under the new rules, those with light injuries will receive $10,300, and for other minor injuries, the compensation will be set at $1,000.

Previously, Russian service members were eligible for the $31,000 payment regardless of injury severity.

This policy change comes amid increasing economic challenges for Russia, including a growing strain on its defense budget. Western sanctions and rising military expenditures have had a significant impact on the Russian economy.

Reports also suggest that Russia has explored recruiting foreign soldiers, including North Korean personnel, for deployment in the war against Ukraine. According to The Korea Herald, North Korean soldiers participating in combat could potentially receive monthly compensation of up to $2,000.
