Quantum Systems Expands in Ukraine, Citing Critical Role in Defense Innovation

Germany’s Quantum Systems has announced it is expanding drone production inside Ukraine while continuing operations at its factories in Bavaria, Politico reported on August 29. The move underscores the country’s growing importance as both a testing ground and manufacturing hub for unmanned aerial systems.
Oleksandr Berezhny, managing director of Quantum Systems Ukraine, said the company’s strategy balances local adaptation with industrial security.
“We are certainly a role model on how to do it, and we are all models for both sides, because while everyone starts speaking about joint ventures, the possibility to produce here and there, we have been doing it for years,” he told Politico at a drone testing event in western Ukraine.

Quantum Systems was among the first European companies to supply Ukraine after Russia’s full-scale invasion. Its Vector reconnaissance drones were initially delivered as humanitarian aid in early 2022.
The Vector was designed to handle tough terrain with its vertical takeoff and landing, and it could fly almost silently in motor-off mode. This made it useful for a variety of low-profile aerial tasks, offering longer flight time and better performance than many drones then in service.
Since then, the company has broadened its portfolio to include combat drones, with Ukrainian forces providing real-time battlefield feedback that accelerates design and deployment.
According to Politico, Ukraine’s role as a “laboratory” for drone warfare has made it a critical partner for international defense manufacturers. Expanding production inside the country allows firms like Quantum to test, refine, and scale systems under combat conditions, while German facilities ensure continuity and safety from Russian strikes.
Earlier, it was reported that Germany’s Vector AI drone—with onboard artificial intelligence and an acoustic (WASP) sensor for detecting enemy artillery—has been deployed on Ukraine’s frontlines and is undergoing trials with software upgrades in response to battlefield feedback.
