Ukraine’s Strikes on Wildberries and Refineries Could Push Moscow Toward Peace Talks, Stubb Says

Finnish President Alexander Stubb said Ukraine’s long-range strikes against Russian refineries and warehouses are increasing the economic cost of the war for Moscow and could help pressure Russia into peace negotiations.

Stubb made the remarks at a press conference following the Coalition of the Willing summit in Kyiv, according to an RBC-Ukraine correspondent on August 24.
The Finnish president compared Ukraine’s current position with the situation a year earlier, arguing that Kyiv is now in stronger military, financial, and economic circumstances.
According to Stubb, maintaining that momentum requires continued military and financial assistance to Ukraine, including support for its ability to conduct long-range strikes inside Russia.

Stubb also pointed to what he described as changing attitudes toward the war among the Russian population. According to the Finnish president, 65% of Russians now say they want the war to end.
He specifically linked the shift in public sentiment to Ukrainian strikes on Wildberries warehouses in Russia, saying such attacks had contributed to a 10-percentage-point increase in the share of Russians favoring an end to the war.
Stubb argued that Ukraine’s long-range strike campaign is therefore not only militarily significant but could also increase domestic pressure on Moscow and ultimately influence the Kremlin’s willingness to negotiate.
The Finnish president’s remarks came as Ukraine has increasingly used domestically produced long-range drones and other weapons to target Russian oil refineries, logistics facilities, and other sites inside Russia, a campaign Ukrainian officials have described as “long-range sanctions.”
At the same time, Ukraine is working with its partners to further expand its long-range capabilities. The country is set to establish domestic production of Storm Shadow cruise missiles after the United Kingdom authorized the transfer of the necessary technology. British and French defense companies will also participate in developing the production capability.
