Russia Claims Iskander Strike Targeted Ukrainian Forces, Hits Danish Demining Mission Instead

The Russian Ministry of Defense claimed that a missile strike in Chernihiv, carried out using the Iskander missile system, targeted “10 combatants and 8 vehicles with Ukrainian drone launch systems,” framing the attack as a precision military operation.
According to Ukrainian officials, the strike hit a humanitarian demining mission operated by the Danish Refugee Council, killing two staff members and injuring at least five others. Ukraine’s Human Rights Commissioner, Dmytro Lubinets, condemned the attack as a deliberate assault on humanitarian efforts.
UPD. As of 10:22 p.m., the Danish Refugee Council reported that two people were killed and eight were wounded as a result of a Russian missile strike on a humanitarian demining mission.
“This is yet another cynical crime,” Lubinets said. “Attacking people who perform humanitarian work means deliberately targeting humanitarian activities. Russia once again violates fundamental norms of international law, and the world must respond.”

Vyacheslav Chaus, head of the Chernihiv Regional Military Administration, confirmed the casualties and emphasized the humanitarian nature of the mission.
“Another act of senseless terror by Russia—an attack on those who help address the consequences of the war,” Chaus said.
Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen commented on the Russian attack on the humanitarian mission of the Danish organization in Chernihiv.
“I am outraged by the Russian attack on the Danish Refugee Council in Ukraine today. I strongly condemn all acts of aggression against humanitarian workers,” Rasmussen said. He called the strike further evidence that Putin “has no intention of ending his illegal aggressive war.”
European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Kaja Kallas, also spoke out, emphasizing that the death of Danish humanitarian workers underscores the brutality of Russia’s war against Ukraine.
“Attacks on humanitarian missions are a blatant violation of international law. The EU remains steadfast in supporting Ukraine and will hold those responsible accountable,” Kallas added.
On September 4, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy took part in a meeting of the Coalition of the Willing in Paris, where outlines plan to pressure Russia and protect skies.
