The Russian army is equipping the warheads of its "Shahed" attack drones with shrapnel, aiming to maximize damage to personnel and equipment.
This was reported by Yuriy Ihnat, head of the communications department of the Air Force Command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, during a television broadcast.
Yuriy Ihnat explained that the warheads of drones, particularly "Shaheds," can be thermobaric, high-explosive fragmentation, or contain shrapnel.
According to the colonel, such weapons disperse damaging elements over a large area, posing a deadly threat not only to equipment but also to civilians.
"The warhead of both a missile and a 'Shahed' can have different equipment. It can be a thermobaric or high-explosive fragmentation munition, as well as shrapnel. Shrapnel is used to hit as many distances as possible and not only equipment, cars, but also people," Ihnat stated.

He warned that during aerial attacks involving shrapnel, it is absolutely forbidden to be near windows or outdoors.
"During such attacks, you cannot be near windows or outdoors, because with such a warhead, the spread of these elements poses a deadly threat to the lives of citizens," head of the communications department emphasized.
Earlier, Russia had reportedly struck a deal with North Korea to establish production facilities for Shahed-style strike drones within North Korean territory. This development was disclosed by Kyrylo Budanov, head of Ukraine’s Main Intelligence Directorate, in a recent interview with The War Zone.
The agency noted that while Iran initially supplied these deadly drones, Russia's own manufacturing capabilities have rapidly expanded. Russia is now reportedly producing approximately 2,000 Shahed drones monthly, with ambitious plans to increase that output to 5,000 per month.
