Russia Strengthens Military Airfields Near Ukrainian Border With New Air Defense Systems and Hangars
Russia is reinforcing its military airfields near the Ukrainian border by installing new air defense systems and constructing hangars to protect its aircraft, according to Radio Svoboda on January 28.
At the Millerovo airbase in the Rostov region, new positions for S-300 and S-400 air defense systems have been established, which were absent as recently as October last year. In addition, hangars are being built or have already been constructed in areas previously used as open parking spaces for aircraft. Similar construction of hangars has been observed at the Belbek airbase in annexed Crimea and the Primorsko-Akhtarsk airfield in the Krasnodar region.
According to Radio Svoboda, last fall, following Ukraine's acquisition of long-range ATACMS missiles from the United States, capable of reaching targets up to 300 kilometers away, Russia moved part of its military aviation to airfields outside their range. However, activity involving Shahed/Geran drones from these bases has continued.
On January 28, it was reported that the Security Service of Ukraine dismantled an FSB-operated spy network planning attacks on Ukrainian airfields hosting F-16 fighter jets.
