Security Service of Ukraine Uncovers Russian FSB Agents Preparing Strikes on F-16 Airfields
The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has dismantled an FSB-operated spy network planning attacks on Ukrainian airfields hosting F-16 fighter jets on January 28.
Two individuals were detained near a military airfield while photographing the takeoff of an F-16. Both suspects, residents of Kremenchuk aged 21 and 22, were allegedly recruited by an FSB operative, whose identity has been established by Ukrainian authorities.
According to the SBU, the agents were tasked with gathering precise coordinates of primary and reserve airfields, as well as other aviation infrastructure facilities across Ukraine. This intelligence was intended to enable Russian forces to carry out missile and drone strikes. The operatives were also instructed to prepare detailed photographic and textual reports describing the equipment located at each site.
To carry out their assignment, the suspects planned to travel by bus through five Ukrainian regions, renting accommodations near key targets to conduct surveillance over several days. However, their activities were intercepted at an early stage. The SBU found incriminating evidence on their mobile devices, including communications and photographs.
Ukrainian authorities have implemented additional measures to secure the targeted military locations. The suspects were apprehended before they could complete their reconnaissance, ensuring the safety of critical aviation facilities.
If convicted, they face life imprisonment with confiscation of property.
Earlier, Russian media falsely reported the death of a Danish F-16 instructor in Ukraine. The Danish Ministry of Defense dismissed the claims as disinformation, stating no Danish soldiers have been killed in Ukraine and labeling the story part of a broader Russian influence campaign.
