Russian Jets Violate Latvian Airspace, NATO Scrambles Fighters
Over the course of two days, specifically on September 20 and 21, six Russian aircraft were identified in the Baltic Sea region. This was confirmed by the Latvian Air Force on Saturday evening, as reported by Delfi.
The detected aircraft did not file flight plans and had their transponders turned off. In response, NATO Eurofighter jets stationed in Latvia were scrambled to intercept the unidentified aircraft, which were subsequently warned and escorted.
Earlier, on September 17, the Latvian Ministry of Defense reported the detection of an unidentified aerial object near the Latvian-Belarusian border, which later crossed into Latvia’s Kraslava region. NATO patrol fighters were deployed from the Lielvarde Air Base to investigate, but no suspicious objects were found in Latvian airspace. The unidentified object turned out to be a flock of birds.
The Ministry of Defense emphasized that the National Armed Forces, in collaboration with NATO allies, continue to monitor the situation along the eastern border. Airspace surveillance has been intensified following the incident involving a Russian drone that entered Latvia on September 7.
