Russian Palm Sunday Attack in Sumy Raises Questions About Who Truly Seeks Peace, US State Department Says

The US State Department said that the Russian missile strike on Sumy during Palm Sunday should raise more questions about who truly seeks peace and a ceasefire.
This was stated by State Department spokesperson Tammi Bruce during a briefing on April 15.
A journalist asked Bruce whether the topic of easing sanctions on Russia had been discussed, and whether the White House or State Department had been asked to compile a list of sanctions that could be lifted.
“What I can say is a reminder that what was clear from the beginning: There would be no negotiations, no decisions, no arrangements until after the carnage has stopped. And after Palm Sunday, it’s clearly a dynamic that – where there have to be more questions about the nature of who’s really committed to peace and a ceasefire,” Bruce said.
Bruce assured that the US will not lift sanctions on Russia until it agrees to a ceasefire in Ukraine, adding that the US continues to work towards achieving a ceasefire.
On the morning of April 13, 2025, Russian forces launched two ballistic missiles at the city center of Sumy, Ukraine. The strike occurred during Palm Sunday when the streets were filled with civilians. According to Ukrainian officials, the attack killed at least 34 people, including two children, and injured 117 others, among them 15 children.
