Russia’s Deadliest Attack of the Year Kills 18 Across Ukraine With Nearly 700 Drones and Missiles

Russia’s April 16 aerial bombardment marked the most devastating attack of the year, striking civilian infrastructure and residential areas across Ukraine with a massive wave of nearly 700 drones and dozens of missiles.
The coordinated attack, which spanned several hours from night into day, resulted in at least 18 fatalities and left over 100 people wounded, according to Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

The capital, Kyiv, faced a relentless barrage that claimed four lives, including a 12-year-old child. In the southern port city of Odesa, nine people were killed as missiles struck a high-rise residential building and critical port infrastructure.
Fatalities were also reported in the Dnipro and Cherkasy regions, where blast waves shattered apartment complexes and set private homes ablaze.
"This night has proven once again that Russia does not deserve any easing of global pressure," President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated, emphasizing the urgent need for bolstered air defense systems.

While Ukrainian forces successfully intercepted 667 of the incoming targets, officials warned that stockpiles of advanced interceptors are reaching critical lows as Moscow intensifies its strategy of exhausting Ukraine’s defensive shield.
During a joint press conference with Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten on April 16, 2026, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that Ukraine’s air defense systems were effectively intercepting 90% of incoming targets, though the country continued to face a critical shortage of anti-ballistic missiles.
While Ukraine successfully utilized F-16 fighter jets and systems like Patriot, Iris-T, and NASAMS to neutralize cruise missiles and hundreds of drones, Zelenskyy emphasized that the persistent threat of Russian ballistic strikes made the need for more interceptors a daily priority.
The statement followed a devastating Russian assault that involved 703 aerial targets and claimed at least 16 lives across Ukraine, marking one of the most severe attacks of the year.
