Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russia is unlikely to use nuclear weapons, calling such an act “madness,” in an interview with Fox News on October 12.
When asked about US President Donald Trump’s potential actions against Russia, Zelenskyy stressed that the size of the country or its nuclear arsenal “doesn’t matter.”
He added: “Starting a Third World nuclear war would be madness. So we can’t even imagine Russia using nuclear weapons. Otherwise, we would need a new planet.”

Zelenskyy emphasized that sanctions and restrictions, particularly on Russian energy exports, are the most effective tools against Moscow. He supported Trump’s view that European companies should stop buying Russian energy, while urging the US to implement parallel measures without linking them to EU action.
He also suggested Trump could pressure Hungary to halt Russian energy imports, noting Ukraine is ready to help Slovakia “find alternatives.” Since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion, Vladimir Putin has repeatedly threatened Ukraine with nuclear weapons.
Previously, Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned that a Russian missile strike on an energy substation in Slavutych caused a blackout lasting more than three hours at facilities of the former Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant, raising serious safety concerns.
