Russia’s War Gains Amount to Just 0.97% of Ukraine’s Territory Since 2022, OSINT Finds

Russian forces have seized less than 1% of Ukraine’s territory in the past 1,010 days of full-scale war, according to new data from the OSINT project Deep State.

Analysts calculated that Russia captured 5,842 square kilometers of Ukrainian land since November 12, 2022, raising the total occupied area from 108,651 to 114,493 square kilometers. That amounts to just 0.97% of Ukraine’s internationally recognized territory.

Deep State noted that Moscow’s most significant gains came in the opening days of the invasion, but Ukraine later reclaimed large areas, particularly in the Kharkiv and Kherson regions.

“Since then, the Russian army has kept pushing, but there has been no serious advance,” the analysts concluded. Overall, Russia currently controls about 20% of Ukraine after three and a half years of war.

The latest figures come amid new reports about high-stakes negotiations between Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump in Anchorage on August 15. According to sources, Putin demanded control over the entire Donbas region, offering in return “not to absorb all of Ukraine.”

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy dismissed the idea outright.

“Russia still has no success in the Donetsk region. Putin hasn’t managed to capture it in 12 years,” he said, stressing that any talks must reflect the realities on the battlefield rather than Kremlin ultimatums.

Earlier, Ukrainian Air Assault Forces had reported the liberation of Zolotyi Kolodiaz, a settlement in the Donetsk region, following coordinated actions by the 79th Separate Air Assault Brigade.
