South Korea Says North Korean Death Toll in Ukraine Hits 2,000, With Reinforcements on the Way

South Korea’s intelligence service has estimated that around 2,000 North Korean soldiers sent to fight in Russia’s war against Ukraine have been killed, lawmakers said, Yonhap reported on September 2.
According to Yonhap, the National Intelligence Service (NIS) shared the assessment during a closed-door briefing to the parliamentary intelligence committee.
The NIS reported that Pyongyang plans to send another 6,000 soldiers to Russia in a third deployment, while around 1,000 combat engineers have already arrived. Existing units are positioned “in the rear front as reserve forces,” the agency said, adding there may be changes in their leadership.

“North Korea revealed it sustained around 350 deaths in the first and second rounds of deployment, while the NIS reported at least 600 deaths in a briefing to the parliamentary intelligence committee in April,” Lee said, noting that the NIS has raised its estimate to 2,000 following a “comprehensive review” with other countries.
Since October 2024, North Korea has sent about 13,000 troops and conventional weapons to support Russia’s war effort, Yonhap reported.
Earlier, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un praised his country’s troops fighting alongside Russia in its war against Ukraine, describing them as part of a “heroic army.”
