Starmer Warns Allies Not to Let Middle East Crisis Become a Windfall for Putin

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced that Britain is working with international allies on a viable plan to reopen the Strait of Hormuz without launching a NATO mission, BBC reported on March 16.
Speaking from 10 Downing Street, Starmer provided a comprehensive update on the UK’s military and diplomatic operations in the Middle East.

He confirmed the successful evacuation of over 92,000 British nationals.
Starmer highlighted the ongoing deployment of thousands of service personnel, three fighter jet squadrons, and counter-drone teams stationed in Cyprus to help intercept Iranian attacks.
The prime minister noted that recent US-led operations have “massively weakened” the military capabilities of the “abhorrent regime in Iran.” However, he stressed the urgent need for a post-conflict negotiated agreement to restrict Tehran’s ability to rebuild its nuclear program and to secure international shipping lanes in order to stabilize global energy markets, BBC wrote.
Addressing the potential for further military involvement, Starmer called the deployment of UK troops the absolute toughest question for any prime minister. He insisted that if British forces are sent into harm’s way, it must be done on a strict legal basis with a properly thought-out plan
He stated that his leadership is about standing firm for British interests regardless of outside pressure.

Regarding diplomatic efforts, Starmer mentioned recent talks with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and an upcoming meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. He issued a stark warning to allies that the West must maintain its focus on supporting Kyiv, ensuring the ongoing crisis in the Middle East does not inadvertently become a “windfall for Putin.”
The UK rapidly expanded its military footprint in the Middle East over the past few weeks in response to the escalating US-Iranian conflict. London evacuated tens of thousands of citizens while simultaneously reinforcing its regional bases against drone and missile strikes.
A previous report detailed how British officials were weighing the deployment of advanced autonomous systems—including interceptor drones developed alongside Ukraine—to secure the Strait of Hormuz without committing massive warships.
By leveraging tactics refined by the Ukrainian forces, London is actively countering the Russian and Iranian drones in the region.
