Sweden Arrests Two Over Suspected Technology Exports to Russia’s Military

Swedish authorities arrested two individuals on suspicion of gross sanctions violations linked to the alleged procurement of advanced technology for Russia, the Swedish Security Service (Säpo) said on May 11.
Investigators suspect the pair funneled industrial engineering products out of Sweden, with Russia's military-industrial complex identified as the end user.
The alleged offenses span from June 10, 2025, to May 5, 2026.

The agency detained the suspects on May 5 and May 7 in the Stockholm area and western Sweden. House searches were conducted at several locations across the southern and western parts of the country. One suspect has been held since May 8, while the other was remanded in custody on May 10.
One of the detainees is a chief executive in his 30s from western Sweden, while the other is a man in his 40s arrested in the Stockholm region, public broadcaster SVT reported.
"The Swedish Security Service takes sanctions crimes very seriously and engages in long-term deliberate efforts to restrict Russia's possibilities to circumvent sanctions," declared Christoffer Wedelin, Deputy Head of Operations at the agency.
Sweden tightened its sanctions legislation in June 2025, criminalizing attempts, aiding, and abetting and raising the maximum penalty for gross offenses to six years in prison. The criminal case is being led by a prosecutor from Sweden's National Security Unit, while Säpo has described the broader operation as extensive and still ongoing.

Wedelin told SVT that the diverted technology could contribute to the war in Ukraine in the short term and threaten Swedish security in the long term.
He noted that such schemes typically operate through several intermediaries to obscure traceability, warning that "Sweden must not be used as a platform by foreign powers, including Russia."
The arrests follow earlier Swedish action against suspected sanctions-evasion networks tied to Russia. In late December, Säpo detained Russian national Aleksandr Sidorenko in Stockholm at the request of the United States, where he faces possible extradition over alleged sanctions breaches.
US prosecutors had pursued Sidorenko for 6 months after an American court issued an indictment in absentia, accusing him of violating sanctions between 2022 and 2023.
Acting on an international arrest warrant, the Security Service searched his residence and seized several items, including mobile phones.
