Sweden will invest $367 million to strengthen its counter-drone defenses between 2026 and 2028, Defense Minister Pål Jonson announced on X on October 10.

The funding will go toward weapons designed to shoot down drones, protection systems for airbases, and electronic warfare (EW) equipment for both soldiers and vehicles.

“This will significantly strengthen our defense capabilities,” Jonson said.

Sweden will also spend more than $157 million to enhance its air combat capabilities, including the purchase of spare parts, equipment, and materials.

“Recent violations and sightings of drones are a reminder that aerial threats are becoming an increasingly important part of modern warfare,” Jonson added.

Earlier, two unidentified drones were observed near Sweden’s principal naval installation in Karlskrona during the night of September 25.

Residents on the islands of Sturkö and Tjurkö reported seeing drones with flashing red and green lights over the Karlskrona archipelago. Police units dispatched to the area also confirmed sighting at least one of the aircraft.

Investigator Mattias Lundgren told the object was “a large drone, similar to those previously seen over Denmark and Skåne.”
