“They’re Already There”: Trump Confirms Nuclear Submarines Deployed Near Russia

President Donald Trump has confirmed that American nuclear submarines have been positioned near Russian territory, following what he described as “provocative statements” from Dmitry Medvedev, the former Russian president and current deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council.
According to The Hill on August 4, Trump told reporters on Sunday that the submarines are “already in the region, where they should be.” He provided no further details on their exact location or operational status.
The announcement follows an earlier statement made by Trump on August 1 via Truth Social, in which he said he had ordered the deployment of two nuclear-powered submarines as a precautionary measure in response to Medvedev’s remarks.
On Saturday, Trump reiterated that the submarines had already been moved closer to Russia.
Medvedev had referenced the Soviet-era automatic nuclear strike system known as “Dead Hand” and made indirect threats toward the United States, prompting Trump to issue a warning and advise him to “watch his words.”

Though Trump did not specify which submarines had been deployed, defense analysts suggest they are likely from the Ohio class—ballistic missile submarines (SSBNs) that serve as the core of the US Navy’s sea-based nuclear deterrent.
These vessels are armed with Trident intercontinental ballistic missiles and maintain continuous patrol rotations to ensure second-strike capability.
The Ohio class is set to be gradually replaced by the next-generation Columbia-class submarines beginning in the 2030s.
Commenting on the situation, Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, Andriy Yermak, stated that “peace through strength” remains an effective strategy.
He noted on X that the appearance of American nuclear submarines coincided with a noticeable reduction in threatening rhetoric from Russian officials.
Earlier, President Trump announced a 25% tariff on Indian imports starting August 1, citing India’s close military and energy ties with Russia amid the ongoing war in Ukraine. He criticized India’s long-standing reliance on Russian arms and energy, calling the relationship “not good” and accusing New Delhi of imposing excessive trade barriers against the US.
