One of U.S. President Donald Trump’s closest advisors, Peter Navarro, has reportedly proposed removing Canada from the Five Eyes intelligence-sharing alliance, according to Financial Times. The proposal comes amid Trump’s stated ambition to integrate Canada into the United States as its “51st state.”

Sources cited by FT indicate that Navarro has been advocating for Canada’s exclusion from the network, which also includes the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand. His position is reportedly based on the idea that such a move would increase pressure on Canada.

It remains unclear whether Trump supports the proposal, but FT reports that it is being discussed within his administration. A source within the intelligence community of one of the Five Eyes nations warned that removing Canada from the alliance could pose significant security risks, given the range of global threats.

Former White House strategist Steve Bannon also questioned the potential decision, calling it counterproductive and arguing that it would ultimately harm the United States.

A Five Eyes intelligence official reinforced this concern, stating that excluding Canada would be a dangerous move at a time when security challenges are mounting.

Five Eyes has been a critical intelligence-sharing network for decades, enabling the exchange of highly sensitive data and coordination on global security matters. For example, a CIA-managed satellite station in Australia plays a crucial role in intelligence-gathering on China.

Peter Navarro, who served as a trade advisor in Trump’s first administration, has now been appointed senior advisor on trade and manufacturing.

Earlier, Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly stated that G7 nations are still in discussions over a joint statement marking the third anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Washington reportedly opposed including language on “Russian aggression,” leading to diplomatic tensions. Joly noted that Canada and other nations disagreed with the U.S. stance at the UN, calling the current diplomatic engagement the most intense she has experienced.
