Trump Says Europe Proposes Weekend Talks With Zelenskyy, Questions Ukraine Election Timeline

President Donald Trump revealed on December 10 that European leaders have proposed a weekend meeting in Europe involving him and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
The discussions come amid growing international scrutiny over the feasibility of holding elections in wartime Ukraine.
Speaking to reporters, Trump said he held a call with leaders from France, Germany, and the United Kingdom, during which the situation in Ukraine was a central focus.
“We spoke with the leaders of France, Germany, and the UK—all very good friends of mine—and we discussed Ukraine in pretty strong terms,” Trump said. “We’re waiting to hear back from them before we make any decisions.”
He added that the European leaders “would like us to go to a meeting over the weekend in Europe,” noting that the proposed talks would include President Zelenskyy.

“We’ll make a determination depending on what they come back with,” Trump said.
Trump also weighed in on Ukraine’s delayed elections, questioning their timeline and viability during the ongoing Russia’s war against Ukraine.
“I wonder how long it’s going to be until they have an election,” he said, urging Zelenskyy to “be realistic.”
According to a CNN interview with Serhiy Dubovyk, Deputy Head of Ukraine’s Central Election Commission, the country would need a minimum of several months to properly prepare for free and secure elections.

Dubovyk explained that continued military operations have already disrupted the electoral infrastructure, with damaged polling stations and large-scale displacement of voters posing major obstacles.
He stressed that at least six months of preparation is necessary to meet international standards.
“If elections are held sooner, it will be impossible to fully ensure compliance with all international norms,” Dubovyk warned.

He added that nearly one million Ukrainians, including many serving on the front lines, face serious difficulties in casting their votes, and that without a cessation of hostilities, organizing comprehensive and legitimate elections would be extremely difficult.
Earlier, it was reported that Trump representatives have given Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy just days to respond to a proposed peace agreement that would require Ukraine to accept territorial losses in exchange for vague US security guarantees.
