US President Donald Trump has indicated that certain actions by Russian leader Vladimir Putin could lead him to side with Ukraine, according to an interview with The Atlantic on April 28.

During the conversation with Editor-in-Chief Jeffrey Goldberg, Trump was asked whether Putin could do something that would prompt him to align with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Trump responded that it would not necessarily bring him to Zelenskyy’s side personally, but he could support Ukraine.

“Not necessarily on Zelenskyy’s side, but on Ukraine’s side — yes. But not necessarily Zelenskyy’s. I’ve had difficulties with Zelenskyy. You saw it here during his visit [to the White House on February 28],” Trump said.

When asked if he could see a scenario where he would provide Ukraine with more weapons to help maintain its territorial integrity, Trump suggested that support does not have to come in the form of traditional arms.

“There are many forms of weapons. Doesn’t have to be weapons with bullets. It can be weapons with sanctions. It can be weapons with banking. It can be many other weapons,” Trump said.

The President reiterated his claim that the United States has spent “$350 billion” on aid to Ukraine while Europe has contributed significantly less.

“And then he made the statement, something to the effect that they fought it alone, they’ve had no help. I said, ‘Well, we’ve helped you with $350 billion, and Europe has helped you with far less money,’ which is another thing that bothers me,” he added.

Trump also recalled tensions with Zelenskyy during a meeting in the Oval Office, saying that he expected the Ukrainian leader to remain silent after receiving assistance but instead demanded additional security measures.

Earlier, Russian leader Vladimir Putin emphasized the growing strategic importance of the Arctic, accusing NATO of viewing the region as a staging ground for future conflicts. He stated that while Russia poses no threat, Moscow would strengthen its military presence to protect its sovereignty.
