US President Donald Trump has stated that Russian leader Vladimir Putin may be planning to seize all of Ukraine, but warned that such a strategy would face serious obstacles, according to his interview with The Finnerty Program published on August 1.

Trump also announced that new sanctions against Russia will be imposed if a ceasefire agreement is not reached by August 8.

He said that if a deal is not in place, "we'll put sanctions on, and he's pretty good with sanctions. He knows how to avoid sanctions."

Trump revealed that he has held multiple rounds of direct talks with Putin in recent months in an attempt to end the war.

“I talked to Putin a lot, and I think we had a great conversation. Then I go home and I see that a bomb was dropped in Kyiv and some of the various cities, killing people. I say, you know, I just had this great conversation with him, and it looked like we were going to—I thought we had it worked out three different times, and maybe he wants to try and take the whole thing. I think it's going to be very hard for him,” he stated.

Asked whether his perception of Putin has changed recently, Trump replied: “He's obviously a tough cookie, so it hasn't changed in that way. But I'm surprised. We had numerous good conversations where we could have ended this thing, and all of a sudden bombs start flying.”

Trump went on to speculate about the extent of Russia’s objectives in Ukraine. “Maybe Putin wants to try and take the whole of Ukraine. I think it’s going to be very hard for him,” he said.

Earlier, Trump issued Russian leader Vladimir Putin an ultimatum—giving him until August 8 to initiate a peace agreement with Ukraine, after which the United States would impose secondary sanctions, including tariffs and other economic measures.
