Steve Witkoff, US President Donald Trump’s special envoy for Middle East affairs, held negotiations with Russian officials in Moscow. Following his visit, he is returning to the US to discuss the meeting’s outcomes with Trump, according to Fox News on March 14.

US National Security Advisor Mike Waltz confirmed that Witkoff is heading back to Washington for an internal assessment.

“The shuttle diplomacy is happening … special envoy Witkoff is out there and bringing things back for us to evaluate,” Waltz stated.

Details of the talks remain undisclosed, but Waltz noted that Washington views the prospects of resolving the war between Russia and Ukraine with “cautious optimism.” He emphasized that the situation would be analyzed upon Witkoff’s return before Trump makes any decisions.

Previously on March 11, following negotiations in Saudi Arabia, Ukraine agreed to an immediate 30-day ceasefire, contingent on Russia’s participation. Russian leader Vladimir Putin signaled conditional agreement to halting hostilities but insisted on guarantees that Kyiv “will not mobilize, train, or receive weapons” during the truce, while Trump, responding to Putin’s remarks, called them “very promising, but incomplete.”
