A civilian bulk carrier flying the flag of Saint Kitts and Nevis was struck by two Russian drones while navigating the Ukrainian maritime corridor en route to a port in Greater Odesa, Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority reported on April 22.

The drone strikes ignited a fire on board the vessel. The ship’s crew managed to quickly and successfully extinguish the flames, preventing the fire from spreading further across the deck.

Preliminary reports by the Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority indicate that there are no casualties among the crew members. Authorities continue to monitor the situation and assess the structural damage to the vessel following the attack.

The latest drone strike on the Saint Kitts and Nevis-flagged bulk carrier follows a pattern of Russian attacks against civilian shipping in Ukraine’s maritime corridor. Russian drones have previously struck two foreign-flagged cargo vessels near Odesa, including another ship flying the flag of Saint Kitts and Nevis.

Those earlier strikes killed a Syrian crew member and wounded the second assistant captain of a Comoros-flagged vessel carrying soy. Ukrainian officials have repeatedly stated that these strikes are deliberately aimed at disrupting international shipping and vital agricultural logistics in the Black Sea.
