The United Kingdom has introduced a new round of sanctions in response to Russia’s ongoing war against Ukraine, adding two Georgian businessmen and two oil tankers to its restrictive measures.

The UK Foreign Office said on September 19 that the sanctions target two tankers that transported Russian oil to the port of Batumi as part of Moscow’s so-called shadow fleet. These vessels are now barred from entering British ports and will be struck off the UK Ship Register, effectively cutting them off from international recognition under the British flag.

In addition to the vessels, the sanctions also target prominent Georgian figures. Georgian politician and media magnate Levan Vasadze was sanctioned for using his platforms to spread pro-Russian disinformation. Businessman Otar Partskhaladze was also sanctioned for his close ties to Russia and senior figures in the Georgian Dream party.

“As Russia’s war footing weakens, the Kremlin is increasingly looking to proxies in third countries to support its war and propaganda operations, including in Georgia,” the Foreign Office stated.

London underlined that this step is part of a broader strategy to cut off Russia’s ability to finance its aggression and undermine its attempts to influence public opinion abroad.

The ministry added that Britain had already imposed more than 2,800 sanctions against Russia, aimed at restricting the Kremlin’s energy revenues, exposing its malign activities worldwide, and supporting Ukraine in its struggle for a just and lasting peace. It added that the UK would continue to increase economic pressure together with its allies until Putin ended the bloodshed.

Earlier, the European Commission unveiled its 19th sanctions package against Russia, extending restrictions to Moscow’s shadow fleet, cryptocurrency platforms, and key energy companies.
