UK Typhoon Jets Could Patrol Ukraine’s Airspace in Policing Mission After Ceasefire

The UK is considering sending Typhoon fighter jets to patrol Ukraine’s airspace as part of efforts to secure a future peace agreement, The Times reported on February 18, citing government sources.
British ministers have reportedly discussed ways to provide security guarantees without committing large numbers of ground troops. One senior government source said that an “air policing” mission would be a viable option, though it would require a significant fleet of aircraft and advanced air defense systems to safeguard them.
The Times suggested that dozens of Typhoon jets could be placed on high alert to respond to potential Russian attacks, while a smaller peacekeeping force—comprised of British and European troops—would operate on the ground to ensure stability.
One source suggested that instead of large ground deployments, sophisticated surveillance technology could be used to monitor cross-border violations. However, it remains unclear how such measures would deter Vladimir Putin from breaching a potential agreement.
Meanwhile, other British military sources indicated that the UK could send one or two brigades or potentially lead a multinational division in Ukraine.
As of October 2024, the British Army consisted of just over 71,000 troops. London has already pledged to deploy a brigade to defend Estonia if the U.S. reduces its military presence in Europe.
Earlier, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated that the United Kingdom will deliver more military support to Ukraine in 2025 than ever before.
