Ukraine and Romania have agreed to strengthen cooperation on joint infrastructure projects, including the construction of a bridge over the Tisza River.

The agreement was reached during a meeting between Ukrainian Prime Minister Yuliia Svyrydenko and Romanian Foreign Minister Oana-Silvia Țoiu on August 7. The talks covered Ukraine’s EU integration, expanded defense cooperation, Romanian business participation in rebuilding Ukraine’s economy, and the implementation of shared infrastructure initiatives.

“Ukraine and Romania share a common vision for the future of our region within the European Union. We value Romania’s support on this path and are committed to closer coordination in the process of gaining membership,” Svyrydenko said.

The sides also discussed expanding defense cooperation, including potential joint production. One option under consideration is a model similar to Denmark’s, which provides direct financing for military production inside Ukraine.

Special attention was given to involving Romanian companies in Ukraine’s reconstruction. Svyrydenko invited Romania’s special envoy for reconstruction to visit Kyiv with a business delegation to develop concrete projects.

“I am grateful to the Minister for her readiness to act quickly and concretely. I am confident that our dialogue will deliver tangible results in the near future,” Svyrydenko concluded.

Media first reported Romania’s intention to build a new bridge to Ukraine across the Tisza River in 2022. In September, the current head of the Zakarpattia Regional Military Administration, Myroslav Biletskyi, said the project was expected to be completed by January 2025.

On August 7, Romanian Foreign Minister Oana-Silvia Țoiu arrived in Kyiv for her first visit to Ukraine since Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022 and her first trip since assuming office.

Previously, it was reported that Romania plans to launch joint drone production with Ukraine, aiming to supply European allies. On July 18, Digi24 wrote that Romania’s Defense Ministry is preparing an agreement with Ukraine to co-produce drones using technologies refined by Ukrainian experts under wartime conditions.
