Ukraine and Syria have agreed to restore diplomatic relations, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on Telegram on September 25, following a meeting with Syrian interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa in New York.

“We welcome this important step and are ready to support the Syrian people on their path to stability,” Zelenskyy wrote, adding that both sides “agreed to build relations based on mutual respect and trust.”

Diplomatic ties between Ukraine and Syria were first established in 1992 but severed in 2022 after Syria, under the rule of pro-Russian leader Bashar al-Assad, recognized the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk republics.

Assad was ousted in 2024, with al-Sharaa, a former commander of militant groups, taking the transitional presidency. The US and EU have since engaged with the new Syrian authorities, lifting most sanctions.

Russia has provided asylum to Assad and offered support to al-Sharaa, resuming grain shipments and sending oil tankers. A Syrian currency reform with adjusted banknotes is also scheduled for December 8, marking the anniversary of Assad’s removal.

Previously, it was reported that Russia had resumed grain deliveries to Syria, including shipments of grain taken from occupied Ukrainian territories, according to Latifundist Media.
