Ukraine and the US Prepare for Post-Inauguration Meeting with Trump, Says Zelenskyy
Ukraine and the United States are actively working on the content and format of a meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and US President-elect Donald Trump, scheduled to take place after the inauguration of the 47th president of the United States.
Speaking at a joint press conference with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk on January 15, Zelenskyy highlighted the importance of ensuring Ukraine’s security and achieving a fair resolution to the ongoing Russia’s war against Ukraine.
Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine prioritizes ending the war under just conditions, emphasizing the necessity of guarantees to prevent any future aggression by Russia. “We want to end this war with a fair peace, which requires assurance that Russia will not return with another war against Ukraine,” the president noted.
According to Zelenskyy, the key security guarantees for Ukraine include future membership in the European Union and NATO, consistent military support in the form of weaponry, and sustained backing for the Ukrainian army. Additionally, he mentioned the potential placement of allied military contingents in Ukraine, noting that such a move would be one element of a broader security framework.
“Our army is currently our only guaranteed defense,” Zelenskyy said, stressing that maintaining a strong military is an integral part of Ukraine’s strategy. He also pointed out that foreign military instructors and training programs could supplement these efforts.
The president added that these discussions had already begun with Baltic partners and would be extended to other allies, including the United Kingdom. He underlined that any security measures must ensure Ukraine’s sovereignty and long-term stability.
Zelenskyy expressed hope that the incoming US administration would continue to strengthen Ukraine’s position in the global security landscape. “The United States is a strategic partner and a key supporter of our fight for freedom and independence,” he said.
Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and French President Emmanuel Macron discussed the potential deployment of peacekeeping troops to Ukraine, including practical steps for implementation and involvement of other nations, as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen Ukraine’s defense.
