Advisors to President-elect Donald Trump acknowledge that the war in Ukraine could take months or even longer to resolve. This stands in contrast to his promise to secure a peace deal on his first day in the White House.
This was reported by Reuters on January 15, citing two Trump associates.
Sources characterized the one-day promises as a mix of campaign rhetoric and an underestimation of the complexity of the war and the time required to fully staff a new administration.
On January 8, Keith Kellogg, who was appointed by Donald Trump as special envoy for Ukraine and Russia, announced that Trump plans to resolve the Russian war in Ukraine within the first 100 days of his presidency.
During his campaign leading up to the November 5 election victory, Trump repeatedly asserted that he would set a deal between Ukraine and Russia on his first day in office, claiming he could end the war in just one day.
On January 10, reports revealed that Trump plans for a potential meeting with Russian leader Vladimir Putin to discuss ending the war in Ukraine, however, he offered no specific timeline for the talks.
