Ukraine Forms World’s First Battalion of Ground-Based Unmanned Systems

The 20th Separate Battalion of Unmanned Ground Complexes (K-2) has announced the formation of the world’s first battalion of unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs), a milestone that further strengthens Ukraine’s innovative approach to modern warfare, as was reported on August 3.
The announcement was made through the press service of the unit, which revealed that recruitment for personnel has begun. The K-2 battalion has already demonstrated significant operational success with unmanned systems, including a notable mission where operators successfully evacuated four Ukrainian soldiers within four days using ground-based robotic systems, Militanyi reports.
Video footage released by the unit showcased the UGVs operating on the frontline, demonstrating their ability to enter dangerous zones and execute vital tasks, such as rescue missions under active combat conditions.
In December 2024, the 20th Separate K-2 Battalion was established within the framework of the 54th Separate Mechanized Brigade, marking a significant step in the integration of unmanned ground technology into Ukraine's military operations.

This new battalion will focus on enhancing Ukraine's battlefield capabilities, improving logistical support, and expanding the use of autonomous systems to protect and assist soldiers on the ground in high-risk environments.
By pioneering the deployment of unmanned ground systems, Ukraine is positioning itself at the forefront of military innovation, setting a new precedent for the future of autonomous warfare.
Earlier, it was reported that a ground-based robotic electronic warfare system known as Kvertus AD Berserk has entered serial production in Ukraine to jam Russian drones and protect Ukrainian troops.
