Ukraine has authorized a $23 million anti-drone defense project for the Kremenchuk Hydroelectric Power Plant (HPP), announced through the government procurement platform Prozorro, reported Ukrainian media Ukrainska Pravda on November 12.

State-owned Ukrhydroenergo, which operates Ukraine’s hydropower facilities, awarded the project to Ukrstal Construction, a Ukrainian engineering company specializing in large-scale steel structure projects.

The procurement, valued at $23.4 million, bypassed open bidding due to martial law provisions that allow for expedited procedures on essential security projects.

Under the contract, Ukrstal Construction will complete the anti-drone fortifications for the Kremenchuk HPP by the close of 2025.

The Kremenchuk HPP, located on the Dnipro River near Svitlovodsk, just upstream from Kremenchuk, Ukraine, is one of the primary power-generation sites in the country. As the third dam in the Dnipro cascade, it not only plays a central role in electricity production but also facilitates critical river navigation.

This run-of-river hydro plant, which creates the largest reservoir on the Dnipro, boasts a power station with a capacity of 624 megawatts (837,000 horsepower) and features an integrated lock system. Its operations are vital to supporting both energy needs and transportation infrastructure across the region.

Earlier, Russian forces blew up the Ternivska Dam at the Kurakhove Reservoir in the Donetsk region, causing water levels to rise near the settlements of the Velykonovosilkivska community.
