Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Oleksandr Syrskyi, revealed that Ukraine is actively working on developing its own air defense and missile systems to counter Russia’s Oreshnik missiles during an interview with Ukrainian media TSN on January 19.

Syrskyi acknowledged the challenge posed by the Oreshnik missile, describing it as “a threat that currently only a few air defense systems in the world are capable of intercepting.” He emphasized that Ukraine does not yet possess such systems but stressed the urgency of acquiring or developing them.

“This compels us to create a national air defense system that is not only an air defense system but also a missile defense system,” Syrskyi stated.

“It motivates us to actively negotiate with our allies to secure such systems. Furthermore, it drives us to develop a modern missile system that could serve as a deterrent against Russia’s use of such weaponry.”

When asked whether these Ukrainian air defense and missile systems are theoretical or already in progress, Syrskyi assured: “Work is actively underway in this direction. I hope we will achieve the desired results soon.”

Earlier, reports emerged that an analysis of the debris from the medium-range ballistic missile Oreshnik, used by Russia in its November 21 attack on Dnipro, challenged Vladimir Putin’s claims that the missile represents cutting-edge technology.
