Ukraine Offers to Store US LNG to Strengthen European Energy Security

Ukraine is ready to provide its underground gas storage facilities for storing LNG from the United States, to significantly strengthen Europe’s energy security, Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha announced during a joint press conference with UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy on February 5.
“We have many shared strategic interests, and our mutually beneficial cooperation goes beyond just these key resources. For example, there is enormous potential in purchasing LNG from the US, especially after the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine has ceased,” Sybiha stated.
He highlighted that Ukraine possesses vast underground gas storage facilities, which could serve as a crucial component of European energy stability.
“If this gas is stored in our facilities, it would ensure a stable energy supply and play a key role in guaranteeing Europe’s energy security,” Sybiha emphasized.
The FM also noted broader investment opportunities for American businesses, particularly in Ukraine’s reconstruction.
“This will be one of the most significant projects of the century, providing some of the largest opportunities for our allies. There are also, of course, frozen Russian assets, and there is interest in utilizing them—including for purchasing weapons for Ukraine’s needs,” Sybiha added.
Earlier, reports emerged that Portugal plans to further reduce its limited reliance on Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) by increasing imports from the United States and Nigeria.
