Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has compared the chaotic preparations for upcoming peace negotiations to the long-running soap opera Santa Barbara, Suspilne reported on March 13.

He revealed that a crucial meeting scheduled for next week has been postponed at the request of the United States.

Speaking to reporters, Zelenskyy explained that the delay is directly tied to the escalating conflict in the Middle East. According to the president, American officials stated they are ready to proceed with the talks but are strictly limiting the venue to American soil. They cited the current war and a volatile security situation that prevents them from traveling outside the United States at this time.

“There is a whole Santa Barbara [soap opera] with these negotiations because of the war in the Middle East,” Zelenskyy explained.

Ukraine has already confirmed its readiness to fly to either Miami or Washington, depending entirely on Washington’s preference. Meanwhile, the Russian delegation proposed holding the negotiations in neutral venues, specifically suggesting Turkey or Switzerland. However, the US rejected those alternative locations outright.

Despite the logistical standoff between Washington and Moscow, Zelenskyy emphasized Kyiv’s total flexibility regarding the venue. He stated that Ukraine is prepared to participate in the talks in any of the proposed countries—whether it be the US, Turkey, Switzerland, or even the United Arab Emirates.

“It depends on the Americans. They are the organizers of this meeting. We are waiting for them,” Zelenskyy stressed, putting the ball firmly in Washington’s court to finalize the arrangements.

The postponement of the US-brokered peace talks followed a series of recent diplomatic delays. Earlier in the month, Washington requested to push back trilateral negotiations initially slated for Istanbul due to the escalating crisis with Iran. Ukrainian officials warned that Moscow was actively using the Middle East conflicts to divert American attention away from the war in Europe.

Disagreements over venues and formats plagued the peace process from the start. During previous negotiation phases, including discussions around a proposed US-Russia economic initiative, Ukrainian leadership firmly rejected any agreements made behind closed doors. Kyiv maintained it would not accept backroom deals regarding its sovereignty and demanded full transparency from its international partners.

Throughout 2025, the United States backed several ceasefire and long-term peace proposals. While Ukraine supported these initiatives, Russia categorically rejected them. Despite attempts to organize meetings in neutral countries like Switzerland and Turkey, the Kremlin refused to drop its maximalist territorial demands, leaving negotiations at a complete standstill.
