The self-proclaimed president of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, has suggested that Belarusian ‘peacekeepers’ could act as mediators between Ukraine and Russia.

According to the Center for Countering Disinformation (CCD) under Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council, such statements aim to create the impression that Belarus remains neutral in the ongoing war. The CCD emphasized that Belarus’s active support for Russia during the initial stages of its full-scale invasion made Minsk a participant in the aggression against Ukraine.

“Any statements about 'Belarusian peacekeepers' sound absurd,” the CCD stated. The organization added that the ‘peacekeeping rhetoric’ aligns with Russian propaganda narratives, which falsely suggest that Western nations and Ukraine, rather than Russia, are interested in prolonging the war.

Lukashenko clarified that Belarus does not intend to deploy peacekeeping forces to the front lines, as such a move would not be accepted by Ukraine or Western countries. Nevertheless, his remarks have raised questions about the true intentions behind his proposal.

This is not the first time Belarus has attempted to position itself as a mediator. However, its continued alignment with Moscow and logistical support for Russian forces undermine its credibility as a neutral party in the eyes of Ukraine and the international community.

Experts note that Lukashenko’s statements may be aimed at improving his reputation and reducing Belarus’s isolation amid ongoing sanctions and criticism from Western nations. The CCD reiterated that any attempts to present Belarus as a neutral actor fail to address its complicity in Russia’s actions against Ukraine.

Earlier, Belarusian state media reported that Alexander Lukashenko claimed over 87% of the vote in the recent presidential election, a result widely condemned as illegitimate by opposition groups and European leaders.
