The 'Budapest summit' announcement came as a surprisehttps://t.co/7DQlJ2Lsfr
Slattery also noted that the announcement of the upcoming “Budapest summit” came as a surprise to him.
On October 16, Trump announced that he and Russian leader Vladimir Putin had agreed to dispatch senior advisors to preliminary talks next week, led by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, in preparation for a planned summit between the two leaders in Budapest, Hungary.
Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha stated the same day that the recent phone conversation between President Trump and Putin demonstrated that sustained pressure can compel Moscow to return to the negotiating table.
Following the call, Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov said that Putin had warned Trump that providing Ukraine with Tomahawk missiles “would not alter the situation on the battlefield” and would damage US–Russia relations as well as efforts to reach a peaceful resolution to the war.
Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy arrived in Washington for a meeting with US President Donald Trump, framing the visit around boosting Ukraine’s air defenses and long-range strike capabilities.
