Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy imposed sanctions on 10 Russian sports figures and athletes.
The measures were meant to show that “sports are not beyond politics” when they are used to support Russia’s war against Ukraine, according to the Office of the President of Ukraine on February 16.
Zelenskyy signed a decree putting into effect a decision by Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council after a petition prepared by Ukrainian skeleton athlete Vladyslav Heraskevych, the president’s office and Ukrainian media said.
We bring you stories from the ground. Your support keeps our team in the field.
The sanctioned individuals had, among other actions, visited temporarily occupied Ukrainian territories, publicly justified Russia’s aggression and occupation, raised funds for Russian forces, or participated in activities involving Ukrainian children Kyiv says were illegally taken by Russia.

Ukrainian media identified the 10 as:
Arkady Dvorkovich, president of the International Chess Federation (FIDE);
Wrestler Yevgeny Baydusov;
Wrestler and Imam Ganishov;
Taekwondo athlete Vladislav Larin;
Taekwondo athlete Maksim Khramtsov;
Archer Svetlana Dashanimaeva;
Sabre fencer Yana Egoryan;
Gymnast Angelina Melnikova;
Judoka Madina Taymazova;
Boxer Fedor Chudinov.

The sanctions include asset freezes and other restrictive measures, Ukrainian media said.
Earlier, it was reported that Heraskevych was disqualified ahead of his run after he intended to compete wearing a memorial helmet dedicated to Ukrainian athletes killed in Russia’s war.
