Ukraine Shoots Down Iranian Shahed-107 Using Homegrown Interceptor Drone

Ukrainian troops have successfully intercepted and destroyed an Iranian-manufactured Shahed-107 attack drone using a domestically developed interceptor system, according to a report by Militarniy on January 24.
The engagement was conducted by Ukraine’s 47th Mechanized Brigade, specifically the Sky Wars unit operating under the call sign “Magura.”
The unit deployed the Ukrainian-made STING interceptor drone during a six-hour period of drone defense operations, in which they reportedly downed 22 aerial targets.

According to Militarniy, this incident marks a confirmed case of the Shahed-107 being neutralized by an airborne drone interceptor rather than traditional ground-based air defense systems.
According to the Defense Intelligence Directorate of Ukraine (HUR), the Shahed-107 is a relatively recent addition to Iran’s drone arsenal. It was first publicly unveiled by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in June 2025 amid tensions with Israel.
Ukrainian specialists have analyzed a recovered Shahed-107 drone. It features a three-meter wingspan, an X-shaped tail, and a fuselage composed of carbon fiber with aluminum structural elements.
This combination is intended to keep the aircraft lightweight while preserving durability. The Shahed-107 is equipped with a 15-kilogram cumulative high-explosive fragmentation warhead, suited for targeting fortified positions and critical infrastructure.

The drone is powered by a Chinese-made DLE 111 two-stroke gasoline engine, with a 28-liter fuel tank providing an operational range of approximately 300 kilometers. Similar engines have been identified in other unmanned aerial vehicles used by Russian forces, including the Gerbera, BM-35, Parodiya, and Delta systems.
The STING interceptor drone is part of a broader Ukrainian initiative to expand airborne counter-drone capabilities. Rather than relying exclusively on surface-to-air missile systems, STING enables Ukrainian forces to engage low-cost aerial threats using maneuverable drone-on-drone interception.
Earlier, Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense announced plans to deliver up to 40,000 interceptor drones to the Armed Forces by the end of January 2026. Speaking on January 20, Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov said the program, launched in early 2025, was developed in cooperation with Ukrainian military units and international research institutions, and is focused on countering Shahed-type attack drones.
