Ukraine has carried out the first recorded interception of a Shahed-type attack drone using an interceptor UAV launched from an unmanned surface vessel, marking a new development in maritime-based air defense.

According to Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces on April 19, operators from the Unmanned Surface Vessel division of the 412th Nemesis Brigade successfully engaged and destroyed a Russian loitering munition in a maritime operational zone.

The Unmanned Systems Forces described the operation as the first instance in modern warfare of an aerial threat being intercepted by a drone launched from a sea-based unmanned platform.

According to the Unmanned Systems Forces, the interceptor drone was deployed directly from a naval USV and destroyed the incoming Shahed before it reached its intended target.

The unit responsible—the USV division within the 412th Nemesis Brigade—operates in maritime areas and focuses on integrating naval and aerial unmanned capabilities into a single operational framework.

The specific type of unmanned surface vessel and interceptor drone used in the engagement was not disclosed. However, the 412th Nemesis Brigade has previously indicated that it operates Magura-class unmanned surface vessels and is developing a broader “Middle Strike” capability that combines FPV drones, naval drones, ground robotic systems, and aerial interceptors.

The concept demonstrated in the operation expands traditional air defense models. Instead of relying on fixed ground-based systems, mobile unmanned naval platforms can serve as forward launch points for interceptor drones, extending the interception zone over water and allowing threats to be engaged before reaching land.

According to the Ukrainian Air Force, Russian forces have launched more than 22,400 Shahed and Gerbera-type drones against Ukraine since the start of the full-scale invasion. These systems are typically deployed in large numbers, often at night, to exploit gaps in air defense coverage.

Earlier, Ukraine tested a modified Magura naval drone capable of launching interceptor UAVs, effectively turning the platform into a forward-deployed “floating aircraft carrier.” Footage from the trials showed an interceptor drone launching from the vessel and destroying an aerial target over the Black Sea.
