Ukraine Strikes 84 Russian Oil Facilities in 2024, Reaching 1,500 km Behind Enemy Lines
Ukraine conducted at least 84 attacks on Russian oil infrastructure in 2024, with the farthest facility targeted being 1,500 kilometers from the front line, according to TopLeadEU. These strikes led to the shutdown or reduced refining operations at a minimum of three oil refineries in Russia.
On January 24, explosive drones hit the Ryazan Oil Refinery, one of Russia’s key oil facilities in a statement by Andrii Kovalenko, head of Ukraine’s Center for Countering Disinformation. Despite Russian air defense efforts, the refinery sustained direct hits.
He described the refinery as a critical site for Russia, producing fuel for civilian use and military purposes, including aviation kerosene, diesel, and other products essential for tanks, planes, and ships.
Similarly to the January 24 attack, on January 20, drones targeted an oil depot in Lisky, Voronezh region, marking the second attack on the site in less than a week. The regional governor, Alexander Gusev reported that air defense systems intercepted several drones, but one struck the depot, causing a fire.
Residents reported hearing explosions and seeing flames and smoke near the facility. Videos of the incident circulated online. The depot, owned by Rosneft subsidiary Voronezhnefteprodukt, contained 23 storage tanks with a total capacity of 47,800 cubic meters.
On January 26, drones struck the Ryazan Oil refinery, in the second attack this week. Explosions and fire were reported near the refinery in Dyadkovo, Ryazan region, around 1:30 a.m., according to Astra, Governor Pavel Malkov said air defenses intercepted several drones. Russian authorities reported destroying 15 drones overnight, including eight over Ryazan.
