Ukraine’s drones targeted the Volgograd Oil Refinery overnight, causing a fire at one of Russia’s largest fuel production facilities, according to Andrii Kovalenko, head of Ukraine’s Center for Countering Disinformation on January 31.
The refinery, owned by Lukoil and located in Volgograd’s Krasnoarmeysky district, has an annual processing capacity of 14.8 million tons of crude oil, making it the sixth-largest refinery in Russia. It produces gasoline, diesel fuel, fuel oil, and aviation fuel.
According to Russian authorities, debris from a downed drone ignited a fire at the refinery, which was “promptly extinguished.” The governor of Volgograd, Andrey Bocharov, confirmed that one worker was injured and hospitalized.
This marks the second time in less than a year that the Volgograd refinery has been hit by a Ukrainian drone strike. On May 12, a drone attack ignited a fire at the AVT-1 primary oil processing unit, which accounts for nearly 59% of the plant’s capacity, forcing operations to halt for several days.
Earlier, reports emerged that the Novoshakhtinsk oil refinery in Russia’s Rostov region halted operations following Ukrainian drone strikes.
